PIAA volleyball tourney preview: Northampton and Parkland both face tough matchups on Saturday

The Northampton boys volleyball team is making the most of its first trip to the state tournament.

A mix of natural athleticism, court awareness, non-stop energy, and a boisterous fan base has resulted in huge success for the Konkrete Kids this year.

After a PIAA first round triumph over Warwick, which was ranked as high as No. 4 in the state according to the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association, the K-Kids now shift focus to a new task.

Northampton, currently ranked No. 7 in the state, is set to battle No. 10 Neshaminy in the first match of a PIAA quarterfinal doubleheader on Saturday at Wyomissing High School.

The late match will pit Parkland against the top-ranked team in the state, Central Dauphin.

The Trojans are firing on all cylinders right now and will undoubtedly throw everything they have at the Rams.

Here’s a quick look at the quarterfinal round matchups for Northampton and Parkland:

Who: Neshaminy (District 1 champion) vs. Northampton (District 11 Champion)

What: PIAA Quarterfinals

Where: Wyomissing High School

When: 1:30 p.m. Saturday

Head Coaches: Neshaminy: Patrick Klingerman; Northampton: Sue Arndt

How they got there

Northampton (22-2): When the Konkrete Kids edged Warwick in five sets on Tuesday, their state ranking bolstered. They’ve flown relatively under the radar for much of the season, but have now sent shock waves around the state. The message? Never count out Northampton.

Neshaminy (22-0): A first round sweep of District 12 runner-up George Washington has the Redskins feeling confident. The team has only dropped seven sets all season, and has yet to be pushed to a fifth set. Klingerman believes his team is clicking at the right time.

Key Players

Northampton: Jackson Fehnel, Alex Schoenen, Johnny Martinez, Keller Repasch, and Duane Milnes.

Neshaminy: Josh Hamilton, Kieran Edwards, Dan Berzin, Josh Adler, and Ben Clendening.

Who: Parkland (District 11 Runner-Up) vs. Central Dauphin (District 3 Champion)

What: PIAA Quarterfinals

Where: Wyomissing High School

When: 3 p.m. Saturday

Head Coaches: Parkland: Scott Trumbauer; Central Dauphin: Josh Brenneman

How they got there

Parkland (19-5): The Trojans won three competitive sets against Abington Heights on Tuesday, earning a shutout victory. The team knows what it’s in for in a quarterfinal round matchup against Central Dauphin. However, if there’s one team that can outsmart the best of the best, it’s Parkland.

Central Dauphin (19-0): The Rams, ranked No. 5 in the country by USA Today, made short work of their first round opponent Upper Dublin. Led by a senior-laden squad, Central is considered the clear favorite to cop a PIAA title next week.

Key Players

Parkland: Matt Bauer, Chase Robbins, Owen Rodgers, Azhar Sumar, and Lukas Dashukewich.

Central Dauphin: Gavin Yutesler, Tyler McConnell, Braden Berkebile, Jacob Miller, and Michael Zukowski.
