Volleyball team graduates two starters

For the first time in three years, the Parkland boys volleyball team enters its spring season without a championship to defend. The Trojans finished the 2017 season at 16-4 overall and qualified for both the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 Class 3A tournaments, but fell in the quarterfinals to Whitehall in both postseason events. They were the defending three-time district champions.

Despite the graduations of senior starters Michael Zeky and Garrett Weigel, along with Sai Mallipedhi, Parkland has a lot to look forward to with a wide range of talent and experience returning. The top returnees include Nick Mohr (senior, setter/OH), Derek Hockenberry (senior, OH), Brayden Koch (senior, OPP), Ian Dashukewich (junior, MH), Seth Fine (junior, setter), Logan Iacobelli (sophomore, libero) and Ben Iacobelli (sophomore, libero)

"Seth Fine is coming off a very successful club season," said Parkland head coach Scott Trumbauer. "He brings big-match experience. A bunch of the returners saw significant time on the varsity court last year."

Noah Moreef (Soph Setter/OH) is one of the newcomers to this year's team that Trumbauer expects to contribute, but success will depend on the entire team coming together and gelling.

"Without a traditional go-to player, we will be looking for a number of guys to step up and take charge, both offensively and defensively," said Trumbauer. "We will have a number of positions filled by players who have played other positions in the past. That will take some time to smooth itself out.

"We're excited to see how this year's team molds together. We have a large number of underclassmen who will be looked upon to help lead us in a number of positions. We've seen glimpses of what the season could hold for us, which is exciting."

Whitehall, along with 2017 EPC and District 11 champion Emmaus, and EPC semifinalist Nazareth all will be challengers this season.

Parkland opens up its 2017 season at Allen on Friday.
