Nazareth girls volleyball beats Parkland in 5 sets for EPC title

The Nazareth girls volleyball team won the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship with a 3-2 victory over Parkland on Saturday at Northampton Area High School.

The final score was 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 14-25, 15-8.

"We're really, really excited about how our girls played," Nazareth coach J.T. Pursel said. "We're really, really excited about the result. We talk a lot about process over product, focusing on the process and letting score take care of itself. And today we were really, really excited to come out on top of this high-level match."

Turning points: After Parkland pulled away to win the fourth set, the Blue Eagles controlled the fifth and final set to secure the win. 

Nazareth jumped out to a 6-2 advantage in the final set before the Trojans fought back.

The Blue Eagles scored five of the final six points to secure the title.

Senior Maria Harding and sophomore Maddie Orth came up big for the Blue Eagles in the final set with Orth earning the final kill of the match.

"I think that we know that it's make it or break it in the fifth set, so we just go for every ball and we just stay focused. Play our hearts out, that's basically it," Harding said.

Top performers: Harding had 21 kills and 17 digs for the Blue Eagles. Orth recorded 14 digs and 10 kills for Nazareth.  Nazareth senior Desta Zegeye contributed 16 digs.

Senior Adriana Goetz-Morales had 23 kills for the Trojans. Parkland senior Grace Steurer came up with 13 kills and 7 digs.

What it means: The fourth-seeded Blue Eagles improved to 20-3 on the season.

The second-seeded Trojans fell to 16-3 on the year.
