Emmaus advances in PIAA 3A volleyball tournament; Whitehall ousted

Riding the momentum of a District 11 Class 3A title, the Emmaus boys volleyball team continued to impress, this time in the first round of the PIAA tournament.

The Green Hornets made short work of LaSalle College (District 12), 25-11, 25-14, 25-18 at Allen High School on Tuesday, as part of a doubleheader.

"I think after the first set the guys put it in cruise control and the subsequent scores reflect that," Emmaus coach Ken Dunkle said. "All in all though, it was good to get the first-round win."

James Haag led the way for the Green Hornets with 11 kills, while Noah Bacon and Jacob Rumfield each had 10.

The Green Hornets advance to the quarterfinals where they will take on the winner of Dallastown (District 3) and Pennridge (District One).

In the second match of the evening, District 11 runner-up Whitehall saw a highly successful season come to a close by dropping a four-setter to Penn Manor (District 3), 25-18, 19-25, 25-20, 25-18.

"We came out slow in set one, but came back and played with good energy in set two," Whitehall coach George Cowitch said. "We made crucial mistakes in the last two sets. We got out played on the defensive side of the ball."

Logan McGinley highlighted Whitehall's effort with 22 kills, 5 blocks and 8 digs. McGinley ends the season with 509 kills, bringing his career total to 1,213.
